Between July 2006 and June 2007, the Women's Rape Crisis Center provided support, advocacy, information, and referrals to 420 survivors of sexual violence and their friends and family. This is a 40% increase in the last two years.
We handled over 3,066 hotline calls during the year, or about 8 calls a day. We also provided support and assistance to survivors at the hospital, at the police station, at the courthouse, in support groups, and at other service organizations in the community, for a total of about 5 contacts with each person we served.
Of the survivors we served whose gender was disclosed...
88% were female, and
12% were male.
Considered by age, of these survivors...
78% were adult women,
10% were girls under the age of eighteen,
11% were adult men,and
1% were boys under the age of eighteen.
Of the people who disclosed their age...
50% were between the age eighteen and twenty-five, and
31% were under the age of eighteen.
Types of victimization (some callers disclosed multiple forms of abuse):
90% had survived a sexual assault;
20% had been physically or emotionally abused;
13% had experienced sexual abuse other than rape;
3% had been stalked; and
1% had experienced another form of abuse/violence.
Of the people who identified their relationship with their offender...
42% had been victimized by an acquaintance,
26% by a current or former partner,
23% by a family member or other relative,
6% by a person in a position of authority (clergy, teacher, coach, therapist, etc.) and
3% by a stranger.
We reached over 13,000 community members through our public awareness events, educational workshops, and other outreach events. 80% more youth were reached through outreach efforts.
