Vermont Statistics
Between July 2004 and June 2005, the Women's Rape Crisis Center provided services to
555 survivors of sexual assault and rape, child sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and stalking,
and their loved ones.
Of those people whose gender we knew, 84% were women and 16% were men.
13% of the people who received services through the WRCC are people under the age of 18.
Of the victims/survivors who told us about their perpetrator, 99% of our callers knew their perpetrator prior to the assault--only 1% were assaulted by a stranger.
In Chittenden County in 2002, there were 38 forcible rapes and 314 sex offenses reported to law enforcement officials.
In 2002, Fletcher Allen Health Care performed 47 sexual assault exams. UVM Health Services performed 7 sexual assault exams.
In the state of Vermont in 2002, there were 153 forcible rapes reported to law enforcement officials.
National Statistics
According to a study conducted by the National Victim Center, 1.3 women (age 18 and
over) in the United States are raped each minute. That translates to 78 per hour, 1,871 per
day, or 683,000 per year.
Sexual Assault continues to represent the most rapidly growing violent crime in America. It is estimated that as few as 10 percent of sexual assaults are reported to the police. (American Medical Association 2000)
For every 1,000 college women living on campus, 35 rapes happen every academic year. Fewer than 5% of these assaults are reported to law enforcement officials ("The Sexual Victimization of College Women" published by the U.S. Dept. of Justice in December 2000).
20% of high school girls ages 14-18 report being hit, slapped, shoved or forced into sexual activity by a dating partner according to the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2001.
76% of the women who were raped and/or physically assaulted since the age of 18 were assaulted by a current or former husband, cohabiting partner, or date; 17% were victimized by an acquaintance, such as a friend, neighbor or coworker; 14% were victimized by a stranger; and 9% were victimized by a relative other than a husband.
